At age 6, Clare picked flowers from neighbours' gardens to sell, until she got found out and made to apologize and plant new ones. At age 9 she made pen pots out of empty toilet rolls and sold them to school friends. She made rose petal perfume that the old lady's bought. And did jumble sales on the front door step with Natalie Fletcher. At age 23 she started MWL Designs from her mums dining room table. Just herself, a desire to create beautiful things and do her own thing. She never quite fitted into the regular. Inventful ideas. From a single parent family. The council house kid. Always underestimated. Her Mum told her that she could do anything. Even if it didn't seem that way. We start from where we are and we use what we have. Always a tryer. Believing that if you work really really hard and be kind to people - good things will happen. She met Marsha in 2005, her boss in London. Marsha believed that too and when Clare showed her what she'd been working on, she told her to leave her exciting graduate job and get back on that train and start what she'd been born to do. So that's what she did. She went back up North and set up an official real life business. This one. But that's only half of the story.
It turns out, when nobody else believes in you. And you get told that you should get a proper job. Your self belief wains somewhat. Self doubt creeps in and you start to believe that you'll never really make it anyway so what's the point. That's when she met him in 2007. She saw his colour auora first. Some people call it that. Nobody else saw that in him either. It was love at first sight and they moved in together after 2 weeks. You just know when you know. The thing is this: it just takes one person to believe in you to allow this thing to fly. Just that one. They built 'this thing' together. One crazy idea after another, applying pure gold to things that really shouldn't have pure gold to them, adding pizazz and outrageousness to their designs. And they took their little card business to places they never thought possible. The girl from Oldham and the boy from Openshaw making cards for The Queen, for royalty, heads of state, Celebrity's the world over. London, Kensington Palace, New York, United Arab Emirates, Sydney, Monaco. Whilst building the business, the pair had 2 children Lilly + Bertie. And that's where they are today.
With Love is now a leading luxury design studio in the UK with a small and excellent creative team. Based in a beautiful 19th century old cotton mill, based in Saddleworth, up in the hills, in the North West of England - about 6 miles outside Manchester.
From the studio they hand blend and pour luxury soy wax candles, hand make every single personalised card and finish them with all kinds of fancy pieces. They gold foil, apply pure gold leaf, produce, manufacture and pack all from this busy studio in the Northwest. It's in this studio where they meet clients and offer consultations (by appointment only) for weddings and events and big projects. It's a large studio, bustling and busy. A creative hub of design, whirling of printers and the snapping of a camera somewhere in the background. When they're not on location shooting personalised gifts in a forest, they shoot all of products in house too, which makes it handy for journalists who can request hi-res themed images fast for any print deadlines.
